Conversation with Gottfried Böhm
Tang Jie traveled to Cologne to visit Gottfried Böhm, the 1986 Pritzker Prize laureate, and conducted a two-and-a-half-hour in-depth interview with him at his private residence and studio. The conversation covered a wide range of significant topics, including the development and legacy of the Böhm family’s three generations of architects, the landscape and genealogy of contemporary German architecture, the evolution and continuity of the architectural school at the Technical University of Munich from his student days to the present, as well as the enduring influence and transmission of the Bauhaus in Germany and worldwide.
At the conclusion of the interview, Gottfried Böhm personally presented Tang Jie with several monographs authored by himself and his wife, inscribed with his autograph as a keepsake.
In 2021, architect Gottfried Böhm passed away at the age of 101. In his later years, he lived a quiet and reclusive life, rarely appearing in public. As one of the few Chinese architects who had the opportunity to meet him in person, Tang Jie not only gathered invaluable first-hand materials by recording Böhm’s oral accounts of architectural history, but also conveyed greetings and blessings from the Chinese architectural community.
